Julie McCombe

(née McCoy)

Julie offers an expansive skillset with an innate ability to switch effortlessly between left-brain analytical strategic thinking and right-brain intuition and creativity. Her experience spans multiple facets of business, and she has worked with clients across dozens of industry sectors.

“I understand the challenges that business leaders face and the support they require. I work with my clients as partners, respectful of each others’ experience and knowledge. I develop a clear understanding of their industry, competitors, products/services, their core ethos, vision and mission, and we work together, often for many years, in the best interest of their business.”

A Big Picture, Lateral Thinker

Julie established McCoy Design in 1998 to provide a bespoke service to a niche clientele who demanded advertising agency standards but with a more personalised relationship.

In 2000 Julie added web development to her skillset producing websites for Tatler Events, Zarraffa’s Coffee and The Perfume Connection.

In 2007 Julie co-founded 2 Stubborn Mules with Iain McCombe to provide consultancy services to the Restaurant, Catering and Hospitality industry. Both boasting diverse and extensive experience in the hospitality industry, they offer kitchen logistics and planning, operations support, team training, menu development and design, brand development, logo design, graphic design, signage conceptualisation, product development, social media setup and website development services.

In 2021 McCoy Design rebranded as Stubborn Creative following the marriage of Julie McCoy and Iain McCombe.

Julie has a City and Guilds Diploma of Accountancy and Bookkeeping and has cross-trained in all aspects of accounts, food and beverage administration, purchasing, inventory control and executive administration. Prior to becoming a graphic designer, Julie worked in the Training department for Conrad Hotel and Jupiters Casino and had an integral role in establishing Conrad College, a revenue making training centre for the hospitality industry. She coordinated the training programs, co-created lesson plans, was the apprentice co-ordinator (20+ apprentices) and PA to the Training Manager. Prior, Julie was Front Office Supervisor of an English country manor, the hotel of choice for several airlines at London Gatwick airport.

Through Tatler Events, Julie became the designer for the Gold Coast based ‘Edward De Bono Centre For Thinking’, where she also trained in ‘Lateral Thinking’ and the ‘Six Thinking Hats’ method, with Author, Professor of Psychology and Philosophy, Dr Edward De Bono and attended his lectures with business leaders and schools.

Julie has worked on major events, including four years with the Royal National Agricultural Industrial Assoc. of Queensland and the Royal Queensland Show and various events with IMG, including Honda Indy Grand Prix, Mercedes Benz Cup Golf Tournament and World Figure Skating, Tatler Events on The Feast of Broadbeach and Magic Millions and more recently PRIMEX.

The Design Journey

In 1989 Julie was offered the opportunity to become Junior Graphic Designer for Conrad Hotel and Jupiters Casino: a role created especially for her, training with the Apple and Adobe teams (with co-developer of Photoshop, Russell Brown), to implement the early Apple Macs (IIFX) into the Marketing Services department. Promptly promoted, she enjoyed five years of big-budget campaigns, working with an executive management team from all over the world.

Streamline your food business, new or existing. Targeted menu development, kitchen planning, flow of service improvements, establish or raise standards, mentor and train your team.

Very rarely does one find a true professional that you can completely trust with your brand/brief – let alone a person that is fun to work with and able to deliver to deadline! So several years ago when I was fortunate enough to find Julie McCoy to do work on my graphic and website design, I was ecstatic! Due to Julie’s expert eye for detail and dedicated approach to her work, I have always felt I can relax in the knowledge that everything will be perfectly executed and thoroughly checked and delivered on time, on budget. Her expertise in production ensures every job that goes to the printer has been carefully screened to ensure there are no delays or unexpected surprises and at all times she takes a very personal interest in your objectives as a client. I am naturally very happy to commend her work to anyone seeking a creative and professional designer, who also has a sound understanding of budget management.
